A little about me

Hi all,

This is my first blog post, so bear with me. I am a transplanted midwesterner who has been living in New York for the past 24 years. I love the city, but keep tabs on my folks back home. I’ve always been interested in politics. Two of my earliest memories (other than the Tigers winning the World Series in 1968) were watching the funerals of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Bobby Kennedy as a kindergartner. One of my younger siblings heard so much news about Vietnam that they thought the news came from Saigon. My family has always been political, and my first campaign (for 2 days) was for George McGovern as a 10-year-old. Since then, I’ve worked on a number of campaigns and am a news junkie. My other interests include baseball, movies, music, reading, hiking, and dogs.

Since 1994, and the ascendancy of Newt Gingrich, and earlier, really, I’ve grown increasingly concerned  about the direction and tenor of political dialog and activity in this country. The last 2 years have been particularly concerning, as I see the body politic degenerate into hyper-partisan bickering and lurch towards authoritarianism. I’m not an historian, nor do I have a profession that involves politics, but I think this blog can serve as a way to express how I feel. I try to remain hopeful, but it’s important to be realistic as well.

I hope others find it interesting and useful. And with that, I’ll dive in to regular posts.

Best wishes to you all,

Matt
